No? This is not surprising.
They seem to be pretty good at staying under
the radar. This is quite an impressive type of
ant. The more I learned about them, the more
I’m fascinated.
They are small, yellow and brown, and live inside apartments.
Here are some of their abilities:
Small and agile colonies
They like to fractionate their colonies by having multiple nests. If they feel
threatened, they can move out of their nest within 30 minutes.
Multiple queens per colony
If you want to have multiple colonies, you need to have someone leading
that new adventures. That’s why they are pretty comfortable having
different queens living in the same space.
Meat lovers
They just love meat and blood or anything greasy. No vegan option for
them. I had to fight over bread, meat, and chips.
When they love something, it’s theirs.
So why am I telling you all of this?
Well, we discovered them in our apartment and they just love it here. As
much as we do I guess.
The issue is that all classic ant traps don’t work. You need a pest
specialist to take care of them. Which will exterminate them by sterilizing
the queens. This is a process that takes months. No other way around it.
In the meantime, we introduced a water defense system where we have
water pits to protect our bread or the cat food.
So if you see a small ant-like the one pictured.
Beware, you could have thousands of them roaming around quite
quickly.
